Troubleshooting

Start with the server, then work outward through the browser, network, firewall, and playback device.

The server does not start

  1. Make sure the ZIP was fully extracted and TechStream.exe is not running from inside it.
  2. Check that the application folder is writable and still contains the web folder.
  3. Try another unused HTTP port if 5050 is already in use.
  4. Check the server log for database, migration, or port errors.
  5. Back up the data folder before attempting repairs or replacing application files.

The Web UI does not open

  1. On the server computer, try http://127.0.0.1:5050/.
  2. If that does not work, make sure the server is running and confirm the configured port.
  3. If localhost works, try the server's LAN IP from another device.
  4. Allow the configured TCP port through Windows Firewall on private networks.
  5. If you installed a custom Web UI, restore the original web folder from the same server release.

A client cannot discover the server

  1. Enable broadcast discovery in the Media Server before starting it.
  2. Make sure both devices are on the same LAN and not separated by an isolated guest network.
  3. Allow UDP 5051 on the server's private firewall profile.
  4. Try connecting manually with http://SERVER-LAN-IP:5050. Manual connections do not require discovery.

Login fails

  • Make sure authentication is enabled on the server you connected to.
  • Use the exact username. The initial username is local only when the server created that account.
  • Use User Manager on the Media Server to update the account or password.
  • Repeated failed login attempts can trigger temporary rate limiting, so wait a little before trying again.

A title will not play

  • Make sure the original media file still exists and the server can read it.
  • Try the same item in a native LibVLC client. If it works there but not in a browser, the file's codecs may not be supported by that browser.
  • TechStreamTV streams the original media and does not universally transcode unsupported codecs.
  • For remote HLS, make sure the server has internet access and the source playlist is still available.

Seeking or resume does not work

  • Live HLS streams are treated as live media and do not use normal seeking.
  • Make sure the item is part of the active library so the server can track its playback state.
  • Sign in as the same user whose playback progress you expect to resume.
  • Check for a client compatibility warning if the client cannot communicate correctly with the current Web UI.

Subtitles are missing

  • Automatic subtitle detection currently supports SRT subtitles.
  • Make sure the subtitle file belongs to the media item and can be read by the server.
  • Browser subtitle support varies by platform, so try a native LibVLC client where available.
  • Native clients only accept subtitle URLs from the connected server.

Posters or metadata are missing

  • Make sure local poster files still exist.
  • If you use TMDB, make sure the feature is enabled, the API key is valid, and the server has internet access.
  • Use Check for Issues to find missing posters, descriptions, or keywords in the library.
