TechStreamTV 5.5.1 Release

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 is now available.

This release delivers one of the most significant improvements to TechStreamTV's media management experience, introducing a completely redesigned Library Manager, more powerful Collections organization, improved media importing, faster library operations, and enhanced TMDB metadata and artwork handling.

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 focuses on making it easier to build, organize, and maintain your personal media library while improving the performance and reliability of the Server.

Introducing the Redesigned Library Manager

The Library Manager has undergone a major overhaul, with a cleaner interface, improved navigation, and a more organized workflow.

The new design introduces three dedicated workspaces:

  • Add Media — Import movies, TV shows, folders, and playlists using an improved drag-and-drop experience, flexible import options, and optional TMDB matching.
  • Library — Browse and manage playlists, organize files, create Collections, adjust ordering, and access library maintenance tools.
  • Edit Metadata — Review and edit movie and TV information, manage artwork, search TMDB, and customize media details.

The redesign also improves scrolling, window resizing, playlist selection, action buttons, and general usability.

A new global toolbar provides convenient access to essential actions, including Save All Changes, making it easier to manage multiple library updates together.

Improved Collections and Grouping

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 expands the flexibility of its Collections system.

The improved Group Selected Files feature allows users to organize individual movies or multiple selected files into custom groups.

Collections can be used to organize content by franchise, movie era, trilogy, viewing order, television season, or any other preferred arrangement.

Users can create groups, move files between existing groups, and customize Group Order.

Grouping is now independent for each playlist.

A movie can belong to multiple playlists while maintaining different grouping arrangements in each.

For example, the same Batman movie can appear in a dedicated Batman Collection and a broader Superheroes playlist, with each playlist maintaining its own organization.

The underlying movie and metadata remain shared, avoiding unnecessary duplication.

Existing grouping information is preserved when upgrading.

Improved Movie Sorting

Organizing large movie collections is now easier with improvements to automatic ordering and a new Sort by Date feature.

When importing movies, TechStreamTV can recognize years in filenames and use them to organize newly added content chronologically.

The Library Manager also provides group-aware chronological sorting.

Sort by Date uses available release information, falls back to recognized filename years when appropriate, and maintains the established organization of Collections.

Movies within a group can be arranged chronologically without disrupting other groups or changing their assignments.

These improvements are particularly useful for film franchises, long-running movie series, and custom Collections.

Faster Library Operations

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 introduces significant improvements to SQLite library processing.

Library updates now avoid unnecessary database writing, improving efficiency when importing media, editing metadata, and saving large collections.

These optimizations help reduce processing time while preserving existing media identities, playlists, metadata, and playback history.

The improvements are especially beneficial for users managing larger media libraries.

Actual performance varies depending on hardware, storage performance, and library size.

Improved TMDB Metadata and Artwork

TMDB integration receives another round of reliability and performance improvements.

Artwork handling has been strengthened to improve compatibility with different image formats, particularly when retrieving logos and other artwork.

Additional improvements include:

  • More reliable artwork downloading and processing
  • Improved handling of unavailable artwork
  • Better preservation of artwork proportions
  • Faster cast portrait downloading
  • Improved automatic genre and keyword population
  • Improved backdrop previews during metadata editing
  • Clearer reporting when artwork retrieval fails

These changes help make metadata management more reliable and reduce unnecessary manual corrections.

TMDB remains optional. TechStreamTV continues to support manual library organization and metadata editing without requiring an internet-backed metadata service.

Modernized Check for Issues

The Check for Issues utility has received a major interface and reliability update.

The updated utility provides clearer results, improved progress reporting, better metadata validation, and more consistent handling of missing or broken artwork.

Users can review detected problems and select multiple items for TMDB-assisted metadata repair.

Issues that cannot be corrected automatically remain available for manual review.

The interface has also been updated to match the redesigned Library Manager, improving readability, navigation, and responsiveness.

Continued Web Theme and Playback Support

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 retains the modular Web Theme architecture introduced in version 5.5.0.

The bundled Modern Web Theme continues to provide cinematic browsing, rich media artwork, custom playlists, search, synchronized playback, and responsive navigation across supported devices.

The Server remains responsible for managing the media library, streaming, authentication, metadata, and playback synchronization.

Existing playback features, including Continue Watching, Resume, watched status, and ordered movie and TV playback, remain available.

Database and Upgrade Compatibility

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 introduces SQLite schema version 9.

This update improves how Collections and Group assignments are stored, allowing the same media item to maintain independent grouping information across different playlists.

Existing databases are migrated automatically using TechStreamTV's established migration and backup mechanisms.

The migration preserves existing playlists, media information, grouping assignments, and playback history.

Users upgrading from TechStreamTV 5.5.0 should back up their existing installation and database before updating.

The Server executable has also been renamed to TechStreamTV Server.exe to reflect the current product branding.

Updated licensing and third-party software notices are included with this release.

A Better Media Management Experience

TechStreamTV 5.5.1 represents a major step forward in everyday library management.

From importing new media and editing metadata to organizing large Collections and maintaining library health, this release makes the Server easier to use while improving the efficiency of its underlying operations.

TechStreamTV continues to prioritize personal ownership, local streaming, reliable playback, and a lightweight self-hosted experience.

No cloud media hosting or external database server is required.

TechStreamTV Media Server 5.5.1 is available now for Windows 11 (64-bit).
